On December 20, 1996 - diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Bosnia and Herzegovina were established.
Since July 2012, Ivan Barbalic is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bosnia and Herzegovina with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Until November 2012 - Rashid Ibrayev served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan with concurrent accreditation to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Political relations between the two countries have been developed in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and trust. The two sides share similar positions on the most important issues of international politics. Bosnia and Herzegovina was a consistent supporter of Kazakhstan’s bid for the OSCE chairmanship and holding the EXPO-2017in Astana.
Visits at the highest level
On December 1-2, 2010, the Presidium Chairman of Bosnia and Herzegovina Nebojsa Radmanovic took part in the Summit of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
In May 2007, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj paid official visit to Astana, within the framework of which the meetings with the Chairman of the Senate and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan were held.
In October 2008, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina S.Alkalaj took part in the Conference of Foreign Ministers of Muslim and Western countries “Common World: Progress through Diversity”.
On March 15, 2010, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina S.Alkalaj paid visit to Astana. During the course of negotiations, the sides exchanged views on topical issues of international relations, bilateral cooperation and interaction in the framework of Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the OSCE.
On March 17, 2010, as part of the tour around the Balkan region, Special Envoy of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Konstantin Zhigalov, visited Sarajevo.
On July 16-17, 2010, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina S.Alkalaj took part in the informal meeting of the OSCE foreign ministers in Almaty.
Trade and economic relations
The bilateral trade turnover volume over 2013 reached 842 thousand dollars (total - import of the Republic of Kazakhstan).. By the end of 2012, trade turnover volume reached 969 thousand dollars (total - import of the Republic of Kazakhstan). Therefore, there is a decline for 13.1%. In 2011, this figure was 818 thousand dollars, in 2010 - 323.6 thousand dollars, in 2009 - 183.2 thousand dollars.
Contractual and legal framework
Since 2010, the Memorandum on Cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries, and since 2012 – the Agreement on visa-free regime for holders of diplomatic and service passports have been in force. A package of fundamental agreements - on trade and economic cooperation, air transport, road transport, cooperation in the field of tourism, is under consideration by the parties.
Currently, the Protocol on cooperation in the legal field between the Ministry of Justice of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Kazakhstan, which has been initialed in 2012, and the Agreements between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Bosnia and Herzegovina on legal assistance in civil and commercial matters are being prepared for signing.
In addition, the Ministry of Justice of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan started the process of preparation of three treaties - on the extradition of persons, on the transfer of sentenced persons and on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
