Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Tajikistan were established in 7th of January, 1993.

Kazakh-tajik relations are developing according to the Treaty on Strategic Partnership, which was signed during the official visit of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to Tajikistan in 2015. More than 80 documents constitute contractual-legal base of bilateral cooperation, which cover almost all spheres of cooperation.

On October 15-16, 2015, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon made a working visit to Kazakhstan within the framework of participation in the Council of Heads of CIS member states.
Deepening and expansion of bilateral relations are promoted by the activities of the Kazakh-Tajik Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) on Economic Cooperation.
On March 19-20, 2015, the 12th meeting of the Commission took place in Dushanbe.

In January-September 2016 the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Tajikistan amounted to USD 457,7 million which is less compared to the same period last year by 9,6%.
The main products exported by Kazakhstan to Tajikistan are grain, flour, sunflower oil, construction materials and paints, oil gases and gaseous hydrocarbons, petroleum products.
The exported products from Tajikistan to Kazakhstan include vegetables, fruits, ores and concentrates of lead, zinc, and copper.
Every year Tajikistan hosts business forums and trade missions through the National Agency for Export and Investment “KAZNEX INVEST" JSC.
JSC “Locomotive Kұrastyru Zauyty" has developed cooperation with the “Tajik Railway" State Unitary Enterprise.
Cooperation between the two countries in the field of education is strengthened with each passing year. Every year, state educational grants are allocated for the citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan to study at universities in Tajikistan and the citizens of the Republic of Tajikistan to study at universities in Kazakhstan.
