A cooperation in the field of energy security, an application of the new technologies, ensuring good governance and connectivity issues were the main topics at the concluding 27th OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum in Prague

The implementation plans of Kazakhstan’s strategic programs in the field of digitalization and the country's transition to a green economy, as well as the main provisions of the Address of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, H.E. Mr.Kassym-Jomart Tokayev “Constructive public dialogue - the basis of stability and prosperity of Kazakhstan”, were presented at the final 27th OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum on the topic: “Promoting economic progress and security in the OSCE area through energy cooperation, new technologies, good governance and connectivity in the digital era” on September 11-13, 2019 in Prague.

The forum was organized by the Slovak Chairmanship in the OSCE and the Office of the Co-ordinator of the OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities as a result of two preparatory meetings held in Vienna and Bratislava in the first half of the year.

During the three-day discussion, senior representatives of state bodies, non-governmental, international organizations and the private sector, as well as experts from academia from the OSCE participating States, discussed a wide range of issues in the field of energy security, the development of digitalization, new technologies, transport systems and smart cities, the environmental impact of the energy industry, as well as the impact of digital transformation and good governance on society in the digital era.

The forum was attended by the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Miroslav Lajcak, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Mr. Tomáš Petříček, the OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger and Deputy Minister for European and Foreign Affairs of Albania Etian Jafay and others.

The Chairman of the OSCE Economic and Environmental Committee, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Kairat Sarybay expressed support for the priorities of Slovakia's chairmanship in the OSCE in the second dimension in his opening statement. 

In addition, Kazakhstan chaired the 2nd panel session on the theme: “Supporting efforts to limit the environmental consequences in the OSCE region”, where the keynote speakers from Albania, Azerbaijan, the Russian Federation, Serbia and Uzbekistan shared their countries' experiences in solving of environmental problems to ensure energy security, as well as in the development of digitalization and the green economy.

Within the framework of the Forum, a side event was held on the topic “Smart Cities: A Sustainable Way Forward”, during which representatives of the cities of Basel, Nur-Sultan and Tirana familiarized the OSCE participating countries with achievements in the development of the “smart cities” concept.

Representatives of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry, the Anti-Corruption Agency and the Civil Service Agency took an active part in the discussions of the Forum. The recommendations and suggestions from the OSCE participating States, developed as a result of discussions at the Forum, will serve as the basis for the preparation of relevant OSCE decisions at the Ministerial Council in December 2019 in Bratislava.

Reference: the Economic and Environmental Forum is the main meeting cycle within the Economic and Environmental Dimension of the OSCE. Its objectives are to identify needs and priorities, to raise awareness and to stimulate the political will of the 57 OSCE participating States in dealing with economic, environmental and security-related challenges, to share best practices, as well as to provide a platform for dialogue with representatives of international organizations, the business and academic communities, and civil society.
